Bangladesh batter and Mohammedan Sporting Club captain Towhid Hridoy has been hit with a four-match suspension by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The ban, effective immediately, stems from an incident involving dissent towards an umpire’s decision and is triggered by the accumulation of demerit points from multiple infractions this season.
Why Towhid Hridoy has been banned for four-matches?
The latest disciplinary action was taken after the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPDCL) match played between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Gazi Group Cricketers on Saturday (April 26, 2025), at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. The incident occurred after Hridoy was adjudged caught behind. According to multiple reports, even after being given out by the umpire, Hridoy remained at the crease for a noticeable period. He appeared visibly displeased with the decision, gesturing and seemingly pointing towards the pitch area, behaviour interpreted as clear dissent against the official’s call.
The on-field umpires, Moniruzzaman Tinku and Ali Arman Rajon, along with third umpire Muhammad Kamruzzaman and fourth official ATM Ikram, formally reported the breach. Hridoy subsequently denied the charge and opted to challenge it by requesting a full disciplinary hearing. However, despite prior communication regarding the hearing schedule, he failed to attend. Consequently, Match Referee Akhtar Ahmad proceeded with the hearing in Hridoy’s absence and determined a sanction was warranted.
Details of the financial penalty imposed on Towhid Hridoy
Hridoy was found to have committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the BCB Code of Conduct, specifically relating to “Showing Dissent at an Umpire’s Decision during a Match.” Penalties for Level 1 offences typically range from a formal warning to a financial penalty of up to Taka 40,000 and/or the addition of one or two demerit points.

For this particular incident, Hridoy was fined Taka 10,000 and assigned one demerit point. This single point proved critical, as it brought his total demerit points accumulated from various breaches throughout the season to eight. BCB regulations stipulate that any player reaching eight demerit points automatically incurs a four-match suspension. This automatic penalty is the basis for the current ban.
This is not Hridoy’s first encounter with the BCB’s disciplinary system this season. Just two weeks prior, on April 12, 2025, he was initially given a one-match ban for an on-field altercation with umpires during another Dhaka Premier League game. Following his public criticism of the match officials regarding that incident, his suspension was controversially extended to two matches. However, this decision faced significant pressure from players and Mohammedan Sporting Club management, leading to the ban being subsequently reduced.
