The cricketing world is still buzzing after 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi lit up Jaipur with a whirlwind century in the ongoing IPL 2025, but a post-match comment from Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill has stirred controversy. Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja didn’t hold back in criticizing Gill’s choice of words.
Opening the innings with Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young kid put on a jaw-dropping display of fearless cricket. The pair stitched together a 166-run opening partnership, setting the tone for Rajasthan’s chase of 210 runs. Suryavanshi reached his century in just 35 balls, hitting eight fours and 11 sixes in a knock that combined elegance with raw power. He was eventually bowled by Prasidh Krishna for 101 off 38 balls, but by then, the Royals were cruising. They sealed the win with 25 balls to spare, handing Gujarat Titans a crushing defeat.
Ajay Jadeja hits back at Shubman Gill for his post-match remark on Vaibhav Suryavanshi
After Gujarat Titans suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Rajasthan Royals, Gill was asked about Suryavanshi’s knock during the post-match presentation. In his response, Gill said, “It was his lucky day. His hitting was tremendous, and he made full use of it.”
The comment, though intended to compliment, didn’t sit well with Jadeja. Speaking on JioStar, Jadeja said the words overlooked the self-belief and composure the teenager showcased in a high-pressure scenario.
“A 14-year-old to have that much belief in himself… and then to say it was just a lucky day? That’s not giving enough credit,” Jadeja said, visibly frustrated during the broadcast.
“He lived the dream we all had at 14,” praised Jadeja
What struck Jadeja the most wasn’t just the runs or records, but the mindset behind it all. He spoke passionately about the mental strength Suryavanshi displayed at such a young age and credited head coach Rahul Dravid, batting coach Vikram Rathour, and the Royals’ support staff for giving the teen the freedom to flourish.
“All of us who dreamt of playing cricket at 14–15 imagined innings like these… But this young man went out there and made that dream real. His power, his timing, his composure – that’s what amazed me. The strategic timeout after seven overs, the freedom he played with – it’s the environment they’ve created around him,” added Jadeja.
