Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli has issued a public clarification following a viral social media moment that saw his verified Instagram account briefly “like” a series of glamorous photos posted by popular actress Avneet Kaur. The incident, which quickly gained traction online, sparked a wave of memes, speculation, and even drew Kohli’s wife, actress Anushka Sharma, into the public conversation.

Netizens react to Virat Kohli liking Avneet Kaur’s photos

The situation unfolded on April 30, when Avneet uploaded a set of eye-catching photos in a green crop top and printed wrap skirt. While the images received the usual admiration from fans, it was the unexpected appearance of a “like” from Kohli’s account that triggered widespread curiosity. The like was later removed, but not before screenshots flooded social media, prompting mixed reactions – from cheeky jokes to unwarranted assumptions about Kohli’s personal life.

Comments like “Kohli saab, what is this behaviour?” and “Akaay beta, papa ko phone do,” referencing Kohli’s son, surfaced quickly. Anushka was also dragged into the online chatter, as users began tagging her and speculating about the couple’s relationship status.

Virat Kohli addresses the social media controversy

Amid the rising buzz, Kohli responded on Friday with a clear and composed message via his Instagram Stories. Though he didn’t mention Avneet Kaur or the specific post, he addressed the controversy directly: “I’d like to clarify that while clearing my feed, it appears the algorithm may have mistakenly registered an interaction. There was absolutely no intent behind it. I request that no unnecessary assumptions be made. Thank you for your understanding.”

Kohli’s statement sought to defuse the situation, attributing the like to an unintentional algorithmic action and asking the public not to jump to conclusions. His calm and direct tone aimed to quell the rumors and steer the focus away from baseless gossip.

The clarification came shortly after Kohli had publicly expressed his love for Anushka Sharma on her birthday. In a heartfelt post, he described her as his “best friend, life partner, safe space, best half, and everything,” reinforcing the strength of their relationship. The couple, who tied the knot in 2017, are proud parents to daughter Vamika and newborn son Akaay.

On the cricketing front, Kohli remains a central figure in IPL 2025, where he continues to deliver consistent performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). With seven wins from ten matches, RCB sits comfortably in second place on the points table, and Kohli’s batting form has been a major contributor to the team’s success this season.

Meanwhile, Avneet continues to make waves in the entertainment world. She is currently gearing up for her international projects, including the Indo-Vietnamese film ‘Love in Vietnam’ and an upcoming Hollywood venture, keeping her firmly in the spotlight.
