Three teams officially punched their tickets to the IPL 2025 playoffs on Sunday, May 19, following a comprehensive 10-wicket thrashing of Delhi Capitals (DC) by Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Gujarat Titans hand Delhi Capitals a crushing defeat
Opting to bowl first, Gujarat Titans initially kept DC’s scoring in check. However, a magnificent unbeaten century from KL Rahul, who anchored the innings with a sensational 112*, propelled Delhi to a competitive total of 199/3 in their 20 overs. Rahul’s innings was supported by useful contributions from Abishek Porel (30), Axar Patel (25), and Tristan Stubbs (21 not out), setting a challenging target for the Titans.
What followed was a batting masterclass from the Titans’ openers. Sai Sudharsan (108* off 61 balls) and captain Shubman Gill (93* off 53 balls) unleashed an extraordinary display of power-hitting and precision. Their unbroken 205-run partnership saw the Titans chase down the target with remarkable ease, reaching 205 without loss in just 19 overs. This dominant performance not only secured a crucial victory but also marked an exceedingly rare 10-wicket win in T20 cricket, underscoring Gujarat’s formidable form this season.

IPL 2025 playoffs: Picture clarifies as three teams qualify
The outcome of the match had significant ramifications for the IPL 2025 playoff race. With their emphatic win, the Titans surged to the top of the league table, mathematically guaranteeing their spot in the knockout stages. Simultaneously, the crushing defeat faced by DC meant that both Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), each currently holding 17 points, also secured their playoff berths.
This marks a notable moment in IPL history, with three of the four playoff spots sealed as early as the 60th league game of the season. This early confirmation is a testament to the consistent performance and dominance showcased by Gujarat, Punjab and Bengaluru throughout the tournament.
For the Delhi-based franchise, the loss leaves their playoff aspirations hanging by a thread. With 13 points from 12 games, their path to the final four is now dependent on winning both their remaining matches and a series of favourable results from other fixtures. Mumbai Indians, currently occupying the fourth spot in the IPL 2025 points table, along with DC and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), remain in contention for the final playoff berth. Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have all been mathematically eliminated from the race.
DC, who began their campaign impressively with four consecutive victories, have experienced a slump in the latter half of the season, losing five of their last eight matches. A single defeat in their remaining two games would spell the end of their IPL 2025 journey.
