Chennai Super Kings (CSK) endured a challenging IPL 2025 campaign, finishing with the wooden spoon for the first time in their illustrious 16-year history. However, amidst the gloom, a bright spark emerged in the form of South African youngster Dewald Brevis. Signed mid-season as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh, Brevis quickly became the franchise’s most explosive overseas batter, providing a glimpse of hope for the future. His remarkable performances culminated in a spectacular display against Gujarat Titans (GT), where he not only smashed a blistering 57 off 23 balls but also stunned fans with a colossal 114-metre six in the Super Sixes Challenge after the match.
Dewald Brevis lights up CSK’s IPL 2025 season
Nicknamed the ‘Baby AB’ for his resemblance in style to AB de Villiers, Brevis made an immediate impact in his brief stint with CSK. Despite playing only six innings, he amassed 225 runs at a staggering strike rate of 180.00, becoming the highest run-scorer among overseas players for the team this season. His innings against GT was a masterclass in power-hitting, featuring four boundaries and five towering sixes, effectively taking CSK to their highest total of the season—230 for 5. Brevis’s 19-ball half-century was the joint-second fastest in CSK’s IPL history, equalling feats by Moeen Ali and Ajinkya Rahane, and only behind Suresh Raina’s 16-ball blitz.
Brevis’s aggressive approach was complemented by young talents like Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel, who set a brisk platform with quickfire starts. The South African’s dominance in the death overs was crucial, especially his 74-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja, which helped CSK post a formidable total. Despite the team’s overall struggles, Brevis’s ability to dismantle quality bowling attacks, including India pacer Mohammed Siraj, offered a much-needed boost and a glimpse of CSK’s potential in the coming seasons.

Brevis smashes a humongous 114-metre six in the Super sixes challenge
Following a dominant win over Gujarat Titans, Brevis participated in the Super Sixes Challenge at the Narendra Modi Stadium, a six-hitting contest that rekindled memories of IPL’s earlier editions where players and franchise owners engaged in such entertaining events. Against a bowling machine, Brevis unleashed a mammoth six that soared an astonishing 114 metres straight down the ground, leaving spectators and commentators in awe.
This six was the longest in the competition and earned Brevis a cash prize of INR 2 lac, highlighting his extraordinary power-hitting capabilities beyond the match itself. The challenge was not only a fan delight but also a testament to Brevis’s raw talent and ability to clear boundaries with ease, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most exciting young hitters in the IPL.
