The curtains have come down on the thrilling 2023–25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with a historic finale that will be etched in cricketing memory. On Saturday, June 14, South Africa scripted a golden chapter in their cricketing history by defeating defending champions Australia by six wickets in the final at Lord’s. With this win, the Proteas ended their long wait for an ICC title—claiming their first since the 1998 ICC KnockOut Trophy.

But the silverware wasn’t the only thing up for grabs. Alongside the coveted WTC mace, South Africa walked away with a record-breaking cash prize, as the ICC had earlier announced its largest-ever prize pool for a WTC edition. Each of the nine participating teams in the WTC 2023–25 cycle earned a portion of the pool, based on their final standings.

Champions South Africa take massive prize money

South Africa’s title triumph brought them not just global glory but also a staggering reward of $3.6 million, the highest-ever sum awarded to a WTC winner. Under the leadership of Temba Bavuma, the Proteas displayed grit, determination, and unity, making them deserving champions of the cycle.

Australia, who entered the final as defending champions, couldn’t replicate their 2023 success this time. However, their consistent performance throughout the cycle ensured they secured the runner-up prize of $2.16 million, a handsome consolation for their strong campaign. India, finishing third on the WTC standings, pocketed $1.44 million for their efforts.
