The first Test between England and India at Headingley has been a gripping contest so far. After India posted a formidable first-innings total of 471, thanks to key contributions from their top and middle order, the onus was on England to respond with the bat. Despite early setbacks, the hosts showed resilience on Day 2, ending the day at 209/3. Ollie Pope stood tall with a well-constructed unbeaten century, while Ben Duckett chipped in with a fighting fifty before falling to Jasprit Bumrah, who picked all three wickets to fall. With England still trailing by 262 runs, the game remains finely poised.

Michael Vaughan explains how England can get the better of India

Former England captain Michael Vaughan took to social media to share his thoughts on how the hosts could mount a comeback in the Test. In a tweet posted on Saturday, Vaughan pointed out that while it’s still a long shot, England could pull off a win at Headingley if they replicate their Day 2 performance — but only if they manage to handle the Bumrah threat.

“Windy day in Leeds .. Incredible day for England yesterday and you feel if they have a similar day today they could win this Test .. it’s a long shot but it’s possible .. all depends on Bumrah .. how they play him .. #ENGvsIND,” Vaughan tweeted.

The Test hangs in the balance as Day 3 looms large

As the third day approaches, both teams will see it as a defining phase in the match. For India, early wickets will be key to pressing for a lead and dictating terms. For England, building a strong partnership and getting closer to India’s total without losing quick wickets will be essential.

While Vaughan admits England’s path to victory won’t be easy, his belief that the match can still swing in the hosts’ favor adds intrigue to an already fascinating contest. With Bumrah at the heart of the action, Day 3 promises high drama and critical momentum shifts.
