On Day 3 of the first Test at Headingley, England batter Harry Brook fell agonizingly short of a maiden Test century against India, dismissed for 99 by Prasidh Krishna. The moment, which left the Headingley crowd stunned and Brook himself devastated, marked a pivotal point in a fiercely contested match.

Harry Brook’s grit and fortune

Brook’s innings was a blend of skill, aggressio, and fortune. Having survived a dramatic no-ball reprieve from Jasprit Bumrah late on Day 2, Brook resumed on Day 3 with renewed confidence. He quickly set the tone, smashing Prasidh Krishna for a four and a six in the opening exchanges, and continued to dominate the Indian attack with an array of authoritative strokes. Brook’s counter-attacking approach was instrumental in England’s fightback, especially as he capitalized on a series of dropped catches by the Indian fielders — six in total, including three by Yashasvi Jaiswal in the slips.

Despite the mounting pressure and the Indian bowlers’ struggles with the new ball, Brook pressed on, moving into the 90s with a flurry of boundaries, including a towering six off Mohammed Siraj and a pair of crisp fours that brought the deficit under 90 runs. His partnership with Jamie Smith steadily eroded India’s first-innings lead, and Brook looked set for a well-deserved hundred.

However, Brook’s luck finally deserted him just one run short of the milestone. Facing Prasidh Krishna, Brook attempted to pull a short-pitched delivery but failed to get the elevation, sending the ball straight to Shardul Thakur at deep backward square leg. The catch was safely pouched, and Brook, realizing his fate, threw his head back in despair before trudging off to a standing ovation from the Headingley crowd. The emotional moment was captured on camera, with Brook visibly heartbroken after coming so close to a memorable century on his home ground.

For India, the wicket was a much-needed breakthrough after a frustrating session marked by missed opportunities and leaking runs. Krishna, who had earlier dismissed centurion Ollie Pope, provided the breakthrough just as Brook threatened to take the game away from the visitors. Jasprit Bumrah, who went wicketless in the session and saw multiple catches dropped off his bowling, finally had reason to celebrate as India clawed back into the contest.
