As the Headingley Test between England and India heads into its decisive fifth day, anticipation is at its peak. Former England pacer and Sky Sports pundit Stuart Broad believes that despite England’s steady start to their chase, it is India who hold the edge. Speaking ahead of the final day, Broad said the equation is simple for the visitors — create 10 wicket-taking chances and hold onto them.
Broad did not shy away from pointing out India’s fielding lapses, which allowed England to stage a strong comeback in the first innings. Notably, Shubman Gill’s side dropped Ollie Pope and Harry Brook, who went on to score 106 and 99 respectively — contributions that had a major bearing on the match. The former pacer stressed that such slip-ups can’t be repeated if India want to walk away with a 1-0 lead.
“Getting through that new ball period is going to be key for England tomorrow. I think India have to be favourites on a Day 5 pitch. They only need to create 10 opportunities, and they need to take their catches,” Broad stated.

Captaincy and bowling will decide the game – Broad
Broad also weighed in on Gill’s role as captain, emphasizing the importance of smart bowling rotations and aggressive intent with the ball. Despite backing India, Broad admitted that England would back themselves mentally too, especially in their home conditions.
“They have to be favourites, but England will be talking themselves up in the dressing room and thinking they are favourites. Gill has a responsibility to use the bowlers well. They need to come in and whack the pitch as hard as they can,” Broad added.
