The opening day of the second Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh delivered a gruelling, action-packed contest. In the rain-affected game at the picturesque Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo, both teams battled hard, but it was the hosts, Sri Lanka, who would be the happier side at stumps. After the first game ended in a draw, this match is crucial for both sides as they eye a series win.

Bangladesh falters under pressure despite some promising starts

After winning the toss, Bangladesh elected to bat first on a pitch offering some assistance to the bowlers. They lost opener Anamul Haque early for just 5 runs, but Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque steadied the innings with a brief partnership of 38 runs. However, the partnership eventually ended when Dhananjaya de silva took a catch remove Mominul for 21 runs.

Later, the experienced duo of Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim rescued the side from a collapse and helped stabilize the innings. However, both batters failed to convert their starts into a big total, as they were dismissed shortly after crossing the 30-run mark. Bangladesh were reduced to 220 runs with the loss of 8 wickets at the end of Day 1. The side must be eyeing for a handy contributions from the tailenders.

A brilliant bowling performance from Sri Lankan bowlers

For the hosts, it was a brilliant day with the ball, as every bowler contributed. The key highlight was youngster Sonal Dinusha, who picked up 2 wickets. The left-arm orthodox spinner maintained tight lines and lengths, never allowing the Bangladesh batters to settle. Apart from him, pacer Vishwa Fernando and Asitha Fernando also picked up two wickets each. Meanwhile, Tharindu Ratnayake, and Dhananjaya chipped in with one wicket each.

The hosts will now look to wrap up the tail quickly on Day 2 and gain full control of the match. With momentum on their side, Sri Lanka will aim to come back stronger with the bat and post a significant first-innings total to put pressure back on Bangladesh.
