Providence Stadium bore witness to an electrifying display of batting prowess last night as Shimron Hetmyer, the dynamic left-hander for Guyana Amazon Warriors, unleashed a stunning assault during the Global Super League (GSL) 2025 semi-final against Hobart Hurricanes. In a breathtaking over, Hetmyer smashed five sixes, single-handedly turning the tide of the match. His explosive performance secured a resounding four-wicket victory for the Warriors, earning them a coveted spot in the tournament final and sending a clear message to their upcoming opponents. The home crowd erupted in celebration, captivated by the sheer power and precision of Hetmyer’s hitting.

Shimron Hetmyer’s heroics: The over that changed everything

Chasing a modest target of 126, the Guyana Amazon Warriors found themselves in a precarious position, struggling at 42 for 3 by the tenth over. This set the stage for Shimron Hetmyer, renowned globally for his aggressive T20 style, to make his entrance. Facing his West Indies teammate Fabian Allen, Hetmyer ignited the stadium with an unforgettable sequence of shots in the tenth over. The first ball saw him step down the wicket, launching a towering six over long-on. He followed this with another maximum, a high shot to deep midwicket that just cleared the outstretched hand of the fielder. Allen’s attempts to adjust were futile as Hetmyer’s straight bat sent the third ball crashing into the sight-screen. A ferocious slog-sweep for the fourth six sailed deep into the leg-side stands. While Allen managed to restrict him to just two runs on the fifth ball, Hetmyer concluded the onslaught with a muscular pull shot, clearing the boundary for his fifth six of the over. This 32-run over dramatically shifted the momentum in the Warriors’ favour, with Hetmyer ultimately finishing on an astonishing 39 runs off just 10 deliveries, including six boundaries, at an incredible strike rate of 390.

Hetmyer takes Guyana Amazon Warriors into the final

Prior to Hetmyer’s heroics, Hobart Hurricanes largely controlled the game. They were bowled out for a modest 125 runs in 16.1 overs, largely thanks to Guyana’s Gudakesh Motie, who delivered a pivotal performance, claiming three wickets for a mere nine runs. Despite a commendable bowling effort from Billy Stanlake, who also took three wickets, the Hurricanes’ total never seemed secure once Hetmyer found his rhythm. Although Motie’s all-round contribution, including a handy 19 runs in the chase, earned him the Player of the Match award, it was undoubtedly Hetmyer’s pyrotechnics that dominated the headlines. This late-tournament surge in form from Hetmyer comes at a crucial time for Guyana, as they now prepare to face the Rangpur Riders in Sunday’s GSL 2025 final.
