The fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford will be remembered for spectacular batting feats and a wicketkeeping masterclass as India’s Dhruv Jurel etched his name into cricket’s record books by effecting the stumping of England batter Joe Root, capping a dramatic day that saw Root become the second-highest run-scorer in the history of Test cricket.
England ended Day 3 in a position of dominance, closing on 544 for 7, holding a commanding 186-run lead over India’s first-innings 358. The day’s narrative, however, belonged equally to Root and Jurel, two players whose contrasting skills created history for their respective sides.
Dhruv Jurel ends Joe Root’s heroic knock
Root was at the center of Manchester’s attention, producing a sublime 150 — his 38th Test century — stitching partnerships and breaking milestone after milestone. Early in his innings, Root overtook the legendary trio of Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting on the all-time run-scoring charts, trailing only Sachin Tendulkar at the summit. The 34-year-old Yorkshireman moved past Ponting’s tally of 13,378 just before tea, an achievement lauded by fans and critics alike as one of the greatest feats in modern cricket.
But even as Root looked set to bat India out of the contest, the moment that will live long in cricketing memory came courtesy of Dhruv Jurel. The Indian wicketkeeper, deputizing for the injured Rishabh Pant, produced a lightning-quick stumping off a Ravindra Jadeja delivery to dismiss Root. The stumping came as Root was drawn forward by the ball that spun sharply and bounced, and Jurel, standing up to the stumps, removed the bails in a flash.

Not in playing XI, yet a record for Dhruv Jurel
Jurel etched his name into the annals of Test cricket history with a remarkable performance behind the stumps, becoming the first-ever substitute wicketkeeper to effect two stumpings in a single innings. This unprecedented feat surpassed the previous record, where substitute glovemen had only managed a solitary stumping in an innings. Jurel’s exceptional agility and presence of mind were on full display as he capitalized on opportunities presented by the spinners.
Before Root, Jurel sent back Harry Brook for 3 runs off the very first ball of the 81st over, bowled by Washington Sundar. Jurel’s sharp glov work ensured Brook’s premature departure. Beyond his historic stumpings, Jurel further contributed to England’s first innings collapse by pouching two clean catches, rounding off an outstanding individual effort behind the stumps.
