The Brian Lara Stadium witnessed a captivating second One-Day International between West Indies and Pakistan, with the home side clinching a five-wicket victory to level the three-match series at 1-1. A collective bowling effort followed by a well-calculated chase, spearheaded by Roston Chase and Sherfane Rutherford, ensured the West Indies bounced back strongly after their loss in the first ODI.

Pakistan’s inconsistent batting performance

Winning the toss, West Indies captain Shai Hope elected to bowl first, a decision that proved fruitful for the hosts. The Pakistan innings struggled to gain significant momentum against a disciplined West Indian attack. Openers Saim Ayub (23 runs off 31 balls) and Abdullah Shafique (26 runs off 40 balls) provided a cautious start, but the early dismissal of captain Babar Azam for a duck set Pakistan back. Mohammad Rizwan, usually a strong anchor, found it tough to accelerate, scoring a labored 16 runs off 38 deliveries.

The middle order saw some fight, with Hussain Talat contributing 31 runs off 32 balls, including 4 fours. However, it was Hasan Nawaz who provided the much-needed late acceleration, smashing 36 runs off just 30 balls, adorned with 3 sixes. Despite his efforts, Pakistan’s innings concluded at 171 for 7 in 37 overs (due to a rain interruption which also later revised the target for West Indies).

West Indies bowlers were impressive, consistently picking up wickets and stifling Pakistan’s scoring rate. Jayden Seales was the pick of the bowlers, snaring 3 crucial wickets for just 23 runs from his 7 overs. Shamar Joseph and Gudakesh Motie chipped in with a wicket each, conceding 27 and 31 runs respectively from their 7 and 8 overs. Roston Chase also made a significant contribution with the ball, picking up 1 wicket for 26 runs in his 6 overs, while Jediah Blades secured 1 wicket for 46 runs.

West Indies’ composed chase

Chasing a revised target of 181 runs from 35 overs, West Indies’ pursuit started cautiously, losing Brandon King for 1 and Evin Lewis for 7 early on. Keacy Carty (16 runs off 42 balls) and Shai Hope (32 runs off 35 balls) then steadied the ship with a patient partnership. However, it was the explosive Sherfane Rutherford who truly shifted the momentum in West Indies’ favor. He played a scintillating innings of 45 runs off just 33 balls, decorated with 4 fours and 3 sixes, taking the attack to the Pakistani bowlers.

Following Rutherford’s dismissal, Chase and Justin Greaves formed a crucial unbroken partnership to guide their team home. Chase played a masterful innings, remaining unbeaten on 49 runs off 47 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes. Greaves provided excellent support at the other end, scoring 26 runs off 31 balls. Their partnership ensured West Indies reached the target comfortably with 5 wickets in hand and 10 balls to spare, finishing on 184 for 5 in 33.2 overs.

Pakistan’s bowlers tried their best to defend the modest total. Hasan Ali was the most successful, claiming 2 wickets for 35 runs. Mohammad Nawaz also impressed, picking up 2 wickets for a mere 17 runs from his 7 overs. Abrar Ahmed secured 1 wicket for 23 runs. However, the early breakthroughs were not enough to stop the determined West Indian middle order.

This victory marks a significant comeback for the West Indies, levelling the series at one win apiece. Roston Chase was deservedly awarded the Player of the Match for his all-round contribution with both bat and ball, highlighting his growing importance to the West Indies side. With the series now tied, the third and final ODI at the same venue on Tuesday, August 12, promises to be a thrilling decider.
