The 13th season of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is set to captivate fans, kicking off on August 14 and culminating in the grand final on September 21. Six teams will go head-to-head across six vibrant host countries: Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, St Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad & Tobago. The tournament will feature a full schedule of 30 league matches, followed by a high-stakes playoff stage that includes the Eliminator, Qualifier 1, and Qualifier 2, all leading up to the championship decider.
Confirmed captains for the CPL 2025 and their journeys
This season sees a mix of returning leaders and a new face stepping into the spotlight. The St Lucia Kings have appointed David Wiese as their new captain, a strategic move following the departure of last year’s title-winning skipper, Faf du Plessis, who is recovering from groin surgery. Meanwhile, the Barbados Royals are sticking with Rovman Powell, who has proven his leadership by steering his team to a playoff spot last season after a fifth-place finish the year before.
Powell’s experience and ability to turn a team’s fortunes around will be crucial for the Royals’ campaign. Continuing his age-defying run, the evergreen Imran Tahir will once again lead the Guyana Amazon Warriors, a team he guided to their maiden CPL title in 2023. His recent success as a champion in the World Championship of Legends shows he still has the Midas touch. The Trinbago Knight Riders will also be led by their long-serving skipper, Kieron Pollard, as he aims to improve on last season’s third-place finish and bring the trophy back to Trinidad & Tobago.
The search for new captains: Antigua and Barbuda Falcons and the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots
While some teams have their leadership sorted, the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons and the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots are yet to confirm who will wear the captain’s armband for CPL 2025. This uncertainty adds an interesting dynamic to their pre-season preparations. The role of a T20 captain extends far beyond simply calling a toss; it involves making split-second decisions, managing player dynamics, and inspiring the team under pressure.
The Patriots, in particular, will be looking for a leader who can rally their squad and build a strong identity, while the Falcons, a new franchise, need a charismatic and strategic figure to lay the foundations for future success. The eventual choices for these two teams will undoubtedly be among the most talked-about announcements of the season, with fans and analysts alike eager to see which players will be entrusted with guiding their respective teams through the demanding CPL schedule.
