The cricketing world is abuzz with reports suggesting that Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson‘s decade-long association with the franchise could be reaching its conclusion. Recent developments indicate that Samson has formally requested the Rajasthan Royals management to either trade or release him ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. What makes this situation particularly intriguing are the specific players being mentioned in potential swap deals, with Chennai Super Kings stars Ravindra Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad emerging as prime targets.

The breakdown behind the Sanju Samson’s exit request

The relationship between Samson and the Rajasthan Royals appears to have deteriorated significantly, with multiple sources pointing to fundamental disagreements between the captain and the franchise’s decision-makers. The most contentious issue reportedly stems from the management’s decision to release Jos Buttler before the IPL 2025 mega auction, despite the England star’s impressive track record of 3,055 runs in 83 matches for the Royals over seven seasons.

Samson’s emotional attachment to Buttler became evident when he publicly admitted the difficulty of that decision. “Letting him go has been one of the most challenging decisions for me. During the England series, I told him over dinner that I was still not over it. If I could change one thing in the IPL, I would change the rule of releasing players every three years,” Samson revealed to Star Sports.

This sentiment suggests deep-seated frustration with the franchise’s strategic direction, particularly when Buttler was subsequently acquired by Gujarat Titans for ₹15.75 crore and went on to score 538 runs in IPL 2025.

The disappointment was further compounded by Rajasthan Royals’ dismal performance in IPL 2025, where they finished ninth on the points table with just eight points from 14 matches. Samson himself managed only 285 runs from nine matches with a solitary half-century, a stark contrast to his stellar 2024 season where he amassed 531 runs at an average of 48.27 and a strike rate of 153.47.

RR’s aggressive trade strategy over Samson’s release to acquire Ravindra Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad

Rajasthan Royals’ lead owner Manoj Badale has taken a hands-on approach to managing Samson’s potential departure, personally reaching out to all nine other IPL franchises to gauge their interest in acquiring the wicketkeeper-batter. This aggressive strategy indicates the franchise’s willingness to part ways with their most capped player, who holds multiple records including being the team’s highest run-scorer with 4,027 runs from 149 matches.

The franchise’s approach has been notably specific in their demands. According to reports, Badale has mentioned exact player names from different franchises that the Royals would want in exchange for Samson. In discussions with Chennai Super Kings, the most frequently mentioned names include Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shivam Dube – all of whom are considered integral to CSK’s core structure.

However, Chennai Super Kings have firmly rejected these overtures. CSK officials are reportedly “reluctant to release any of their current players,” viewing these three individuals as too valuable to trade away. This stance from CSK is understandable given that Jadeja and Gaikwad were both retained for ₹18 crore each, while Dube was secured for ₹12 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. All three players have been cornerstone performers for the five-time champions and integral to their strategic plans.

The rejection from CSK doesn’t necessarily end Samson’s chances of switching franchises, as multiple other teams have reportedly shown interest in acquiring his services. The trading window, which opened in July and remains active until a week before the auction, provides ample opportunity for other franchises to negotiate deals. Given Samson’s proven track record and leadership qualities, several teams could benefit from his addition, particularly those seeking an Indian wicketkeeper-batter who can also captain the side.

The situation remains fluid, with the final decision ultimately resting with the Rajasthan Royals management. While Samson has made his intentions clear through his formal request, the franchise holds the contractual power to either facilitate his move or retain him until his contract expires at the end of the 2027 season. However, given the apparent breakdown in relations and Badale’s proactive approach to trade negotiations, a resolution – whether through trade or release into the auction pool – seems increasingly likely before the IPL 2026 season begins.
