The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025 season saw an exciting encounter as the Guyana Amazon Warriors secured a convincing five-wicket victory over the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in Basseterre in Match 2. The match, a showcase of T20 cricket at its best, saw the Amazon Warriors chase down the Patriots’ total with 16 balls to spare, thanks to a masterclass from Ben McDermott.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots innings: Andre Fletcher fights a lone battle
The Warriors’ bowlers were in top form, restricting the Patriots to a total of just 153/8 in their 20 overs. The disciplined bowling attack consistently picked up wickets and prevented the Patriots from building any significant momentum. After being put in to bat, the Patriots posted a respectable total of 153/8 in their 20 overs. Their innings was anchored by a fantastic half-century from the resilient Andre Fletcher, who scored 60 runs off 41 balls, providing much-needed stability. However, the Patriots struggled to build significant partnerships as the Amazon Warriors’ bowlers consistently picked up wickets. The cunning Dwaine Pretorius was the star with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 43 runs, and was well supported by veteran spinner Imran Tahir, who took 2 wickets for 29 runs. The disciplined bowling effort from the Amazon Warriors ensured that the Patriots couldn’t accelerate in the death overs and were restricted to a chaseable total.

Ben McDermott’s explosive masterclass for Guyana Amazon Warriors in CPL 2025 chase
A dominant display by the Warriors saw them defeat the Patriots by five wickets with 16 balls to spare. It was the perfect start to their CPL 2025 campaign, with a comprehensive performance from both bat and ball. In response, the Amazon Warriors got off to a blistering start, thanks to a phenomenal knock from McDermott. The Australian batter was in scintillating form, smashing a match-winning 75 off just 39 balls, an innings that included 10 fours and 4 sixes. McDermott’s aggressive stroke play broke the back of the Patriots’ bowling attack and set the tone for the chase. He was brilliantly supported by Shai Hope, who played a composed and unbeaten innings of 56 off 39 balls. Their partnership of 114 runs was the backbone of the chase. Despite a few quick wickets towards the end, the early damage done by McDermott and Hope was enough to secure a comfortable victory for the Amazon Warriors, who sealed the win in just 17.2 overs. McDermott was rightly awarded the Player of the Match for his heroic performance.
