Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have issued an official clarification regarding the signing of South African batter Dewald Brevis as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

The franchise stressed that the move was in complete alignment with the IPL’s regulations after questions were raised online about whether CSK had breached rules during the signing. Speculation gained traction following veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s comments suggesting CSK had paid ‘extra’ to secure Brevis ahead of other franchises.

Dewald Brevis signing process explained by CSK

Brevis, who went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, was later picked up by CSK for ₹2.2 crore — the same amount Gurjapneet was bought for at the auction.

CSK explained that the signing was made under clause 6.6 of the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, which clearly states that a replacement player cannot be contracted for a fee higher than the injured player’s auction price. The franchise emphasized that Brevis’ contract strictly adhered to this clause and was therefore fully compliant with the league’s rules.

“A replacement Player signed pursuant to either paragraph 6.1 or 6.2 can be recruited at a League Fee which shall not be more than the League Fee that would have been payable to the injured/unavailable Player for the relevant Season. If a Replacement Player is recruited during a Season, the League Fee actually paid to him will be reduced to take account of the Franchisee’s matches during the relevant Season which took place before he was registered and any other relevant deductions under the Player Contract,” wrote CSK in an official media release.

Sublime form of Brevis in the T20I series against Australia

Brevis, popularly known as “Baby AB” for his resemblance to AB de Villiers, has played 81 T20 matches so far, amassing 1,787 runs with a highest score of 162. He made his T20I debut for South Africa in 2023 and has featured in two internationals.

In the IPL, Brevis was earlier part of the Mumbai Indians setup, where he played 10 matches. He now joins CSK with renewed confidence after his blistering knock against Australia earlier this week in the second T20I, where he smashed a 41-ball century, showcasing his explosive stroke play. Even in the ongoing third game, Brevis exhibited his sublime touch, smashing 53 from just 26 balls
