In a major boost for Indian cricket, young batting star Shubman Gill has been recalled to India’s T20I squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. The announcement has sparked widespread discussion among fans and experts, with T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav shedding light on the thinking behind Gill’s much-awaited return. Yadav expressed his delight, noting that the team is “happy to have him,” particularly with Gill set to serve as vice-captain for the continental tournament.

Shubman Gill’s T20I return: A key strategic move

Gill’s comeback to the T20I side reflects a calculated decision by the selectors as India looks to sharpen its squad for major upcoming tournaments. The 25-year-old has seen limited action in the shortest format since July 2024, as his focus had largely been on Test and ODI cricket. Despite fewer T20I outings, Gill’s consistency across formats made him an obvious choice when it came to adding both class and stability to India’s batting order.

The Asia Cup will pit India against strong Asian rivals, and Gill’s ability to adapt under pressure is seen as a valuable asset. His return signals the management’s intent to strike the right balance between attacking firepower and steady anchors in the lineup.

Suryakumar Yadav explains Gill’s importance

Speaking about Gill’s inclusion, Suryakumar Yadav emphasized that his value goes beyond just batting. Yadav recalled that Gill had previously held the vice-captaincy role during India’s post-T20 World Cup transition phase, including the tour to Sri Lanka. That leadership exposure, coupled with his cricketing intelligence, makes him an ideal deputy for the high-stakes Asia Cup.

“Last time when he played T20 post World Cup, when we went to Sri Lanka, he was vice-captain. That’s where we started new cycle for T20 World Cup. After that we got busy with Test cricket, and he didn’t get opportunities. We’re happy to have him,” Suryakumar said in the press-conference held in Mumbai.

He further stated that Gill’s calm personality, combined with his ability to read situations, will complement his own aggressive approach as vice-captain.

Gill’s return: A boost to India’s Asia Cup ambitions

Gill’s reinstatement, coupled with his vice-captaincy duties, adds both depth and leadership to Team India. His versatility at the top order — whether building an innings or accelerating quickly — offers the side crucial flexibility. With Gill as second-in-command, India’s think tank gains another voice of experience on the field, someone capable of guiding younger players while supporting Suryakumar in tactical calls.

This leadership blend of Suryakumar’s innovation and Gill’s composure could be pivotal as India chases continental glory. For Gill, it also represents an opportunity to reassert his T20 credentials and remind everyone of his all-format brilliance.
