However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been quick to put a stop to the swirling speculation. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, when asked about reports suggesting Iyer’s name was being considered, offered a blunt dismissal.
“That’s news to me. There have been no such discussions,” Saikia told Hindustan Times, making it clear that no talks have taken place regarding a change in ODI leadership.
This clarification highlighted that, for now, Rohit remains firmly in charge of the ODI setup, and no official succession plan has been drawn up.

Rohit’s future and the road ahead
At 38, Rohit is in the final chapter of his international career. Yet, in ODIs—arguably his most dominant format—the opener has shown no immediate signs of stepping away. His batting remains central to India’s plans, and the 2027 ODI World Cup, though still a few years away, is already looming in conversations about the team’s long-term roadmap.
While Iyer’s rise keeps him in contention, another name that may shape India’s leadership future is Shubman Gill. The young opener has already captained at the IPL level and shown glimpses of responsibility in Tests. With age on his side, Gill could well be the one to inherit the baton when Rohit decides to call time. For now, though, Rohit continues to be India’s trusted leader in the ODI format, with succession talks firmly parked by the BCCI.
