Former Indian head coach and cricketing legend Rahul Dravid has heaped praise on India’s ODI skipper Rohit Sharma. Celebrated for his leadership qualities and remarkable career, Rohit was hailed by Dravid as one of the greatest Indian captains of all time. The duo also shared World Cup glory, guiding India to the T20 World Cup title in 2024.

Rahul Dravid showers praise on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy

In a recent conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin on the popular podcast ‘Kutti Stories with Ash‘, Dravid reflected on his time with Rohit. He said it was a rewarding experience, noting that Rohit deeply cared about the team, was clear from the very beginning about his vision, and knew what mattered most to him. Dravid added that this clarity played a crucial role in shaping the captain–coach relationship, as he always believed the team should carry the captain’s identity.

“It was really good. The thing with Rohit that I always felt was that he deeply cared about the team and he was, right from the first day, he was very clear about how he wanted to run the team and what was important to him. And that’s really important in any relationship between a captain and a coach, especially the way I coach. I always like to believe that it should be the captain’s team,” Dravid said.

Captain and coach synergy behind India’s success

Dravid further added that while a captain sometimes needs guidance in gaining clarity and understanding what is required, Rohit stood out for already being very clear about his expectations. He knew how he wanted the team to function, the environment to be built, and the overall atmosphere to be maintained.

“You sometimes need to help a captain in terms of getting that clarity and understanding what is required. But with Rohit, I thought he was very clear about what he wanted from the team, how he wanted the environment to be, how he wanted the atmosphere to be, and how he wanted things to run,” Rahul further said.
