Former South African batting legend AB de Villiers has shared his thoughts on potential surprise selections for India’s squad for Asia Cup 2025. Known for his sharp cricketing insights and close connection with Indian cricket, De Villiers responded to a fan’s query on social media regarding wildcard inclusions in the team.
Star batter tipped as a strong contender by AB de Villiers
When asked about a possible wildcard entry, De Villiers pointed to Shreyas Iyer as one of the standout options. He praised Iyer not just for his batting skills but also for his leadership qualities, which could prove valuable in a high-pressure tournament like the Asia Cup.
De Villiers highlighted that Iyer’s ability to handle responsibility and guide younger players makes him a natural fit for a leadership role, even if he is not the official captain. With India preparing for the multi-nation event, Iyer’s potential comeback could add stability and experience in the middle order.
“It’s gotta be Shryas. But I’m not sure. But the easy one would be someone like Shreyas. Lots of leadership qualities,” said De Villiers on his Facebook live.

De Villiers picks veteran spinner as second wildcard entrant
Alongside Iyer, De Villiers also backed veteran leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal as another wildcard option. He expressed admiration for Chahal’s recent performances in the UK, where the spinner has been making headlines with five-wicket hauls in domestic competitions.
“Yuzi Chahal. He’s got so much class. He’s in the UK causing havoc there, taking five-wicket hauls. He’s in fantastic form. Would love to see Yuzi in Team India’s starting line-up again,” added De Villiers.
India’s strong squad for Asia Cup 2025
Team India heads into the Asia Cup with a well-rounded and formidable squad. Suryakumar Yadav will lead the side with Shubman Gill as his deputy, while Sanju Samson takes charge behind the stumps. The team also features explosive all-rounders like Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel, experienced bowlers such as Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, along with emerging talents like Abhishek Sharma. With such depth and balance, India enters the tournament as one of the favorites.
