New Zealand speedster Lockie Ferguson has revisited the famous moment from the World Cup semifinal 2019 when MS Dhoni unexpectedly left one of his sharp deliveries. The incident sparked immense curiosity and confusion across the cricketing world, remaining one of the most debated passages in recent knockout history.

Lockie Ferguson revisits MS Dhoni’s puzzling leave in World Cup 2019 semifinal

In a recent conversation with CricTracker Ferguson said that he couldn’t remember the exact target but knew the Indian side had to score a few runs. The plan was to bowl and see if Dhoni would undercut it but he let the ball go. While a batter leaving the ball is usually a positive for a bowler looking to restrict runs, the moment remains a head-scratcher due to the game’s high-stakes context.

“I can’t remember what they were needing to chase at the time, but I knew they had to score a few runs. The plan was to bowl and see if MS would undercut it, and he left it. So I was surprised because naturally, when you’re bowling, you’re trying to restrict runs, then it’s nice when a batter leaves it,” Ferguson told to CricTracker.

Ferguson further added that he tried the same plan in the next over, but on the very first ball, Dhoni hit it for a six over the boundary. The New Zealand pacer reflected that the plan almost worked a second time. However, he concluded by saying it was good to get Dhoni out in that game and for New Zealand to win the semi-final.

“But I think the next over, the first ball, I tried again, and he just got it over the boundary for six. So the plan almost worked the second time as well. But it was nice to get him out that game and, of course, get across the line in the semi-final,” Ferguson further added.

India’s World Cup 2019 run ended in heartbreak against New Zealand. Chasing 240, Dhoni fought hard with a gritty fifty but was run out by Martin Guptill’s brilliant direct hit in the final overs. That moment ended India’s hopes and left fans shattered after what had been a remarkable campaign.
