In a thrilling contest at The Rose Bowl, Southampton, Southern Brave edged past Welsh Fire by just four runs in Match 32 of The Hundred 2025. The game had plenty of action, but Jason Roy’s spectacular catch to dismiss a star batter became the standout moment of the night.
Jas Roy’s stunning catch gets rid of Steve Smith
The highlight of the match came in Craig Overton’s opening set with the ball. Bowling a back-of-a-length delivery outside off, Overton tempted Steve Smith into a punch shot. The Australian star failed to keep the ball down, and Roy—positioned at short cover—reacted with lightning speed. Diving forward, he grabbed the ball inches above the turf, completing a brilliant low catch that sent Smith packing. Overton, who was already on top with an early breakthrough, picked up his second wicket of the set, putting Southern Brave in control.

Southern Brave register a thrilling win over Welsh Fire
Earlier in the evening, Welsh Fire had won the toss and opted to bowl first. Roy carried his fine form into the match, smashing a fluent 70 off just 39 deliveries to anchor the Brave innings. His aggressive strokeplay gave the side momentum, despite regular wickets falling at the other end. David Payne was the pick of the bowlers for Welsh Fire, returning figures of 2 for 17, as Southern Brave finished with a competitive 167 for 7 from their 100 balls.
Chasing 168, Welsh Fire found themselves in early trouble, but Tom Kohler-Cadmore kept their hopes alive with a brilliant counter-attacking knock of 84 from 46 balls. His power-hitting brought the chase down to the wire. However, Overton’s disciplined spell of 3 for 22 turned out to be decisive in the death overs, as Welsh Fire fell just short at 163 for 6.
