Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has thrown his weight behind New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert, suggesting that the St Lucia Kings star could be a perfect fit for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in future Indian Premier League (IPL) seasons. Ashwin’s comments came on his YouTube channel, where he praised Seifert’s consistency and big-hitting form in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025.

Why Tim Seifert suits CSK’s playing style?

Ashwin highlighted Seifert’s aggressive intent and adaptability as qualities that align seamlessly with CSK’s requirements. Known for banking on experienced and proven T20 performers, the Super Kings traditionally opted for battle-tested overseas openers, with past names including Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum.

According to Ashwin, Seifert’s ability to open the innings, keep wickets and field reliably makes him an all-round asset. His finishing skills and fearless batting in pressure chases further enhance his appeal for a franchise like CSK, which values composure under pressure.

Recounting one of Seifert’s standout innings in CPL 2025, Ashwin said the Kiwi batter struck a century off just 40 balls while chasing 202 for St Lucia Kings. Instead of slowing down to secure personal milestones, Seifert showcased his selfless approach by hitting consecutive sixes to move from 87 to 99 before calmly completing his hundred.

“Scoring a century in T20 cricket is not easy, but he did so playing selflessly,” Ashwin noted, lauding Seifert’s team-first attitude.

What would be CSK’s auction strategy for IPL 2026? Answers Ashwin

Ashwin placed his endorsement in the broader context of CSK’s squad-building strategy. With speculation around whether the franchise will retain Devon Conway or Rachin Ravindra, Ashwin suggested Seifert could emerge as a viable replacement. CSK has historically leaned toward experienced overseas openers who can handle IPL conditions, and Seifert’s stints across global leagues strengthen his credentials.

Ashwin explained: “If CSK decides to move on from Conway or Ravindra, Seifert ticks the boxes they usually look for. He’s experienced, has played in multiple leagues, and being a New Zealander adds to the fit.”

Seifert’s impressive CPL campaign has further elevated his reputation in the T20 circuit. Already known for his attacking stroke play and wicketkeeping skills, his recent form could draw significant attention in the IPL 2026 auction.
