The opening T20I of the South Africa tour of England 2025 at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, had all the ingredients of a thrilling contest — explosive batting, sharp bowling, spectacular fielding, and rain interruptions. Reduced to a nine-over shootout due to persistent showers, the game swung back and forth before South Africa held their nerve to register a 14-run victory via the DLS method, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
England skipper Harry Brook won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping to make use of the damp conditions. Luke Wood delivered early breakthroughs, but the standout moment came in the third over when Brook produced a moment of brilliance in the field, sending Lhuan-dre Pretorius back to the pavilion with a breathtaking catch.
Harry Brook pulls off a stunner to remove Lhuan-dre Pretorius
The crowd in Cardiff was treated to something special in the third over of South Africa’s innings. Wood bowled a hard back-of-a-length delivery outside off to Pretorius, who attempted an ambitious flat-batted shot. However, the timing went awry, and the ball looked destined to drop short of mid-off.
Enter Brook. Positioned inside the circle, Brook read the trajectory instantly, charged forward, and then launched into a full-length dive. With impeccable timing and technique, he completed a two-handed catch just inches from the turf. The dismissal not only showcased Brook’s athleticism but also highlighted England’s sharp fielding standards in high-pressure situations.
The commentators and fans alike were left in awe of the catch, and England’s official social media handles quickly shared the clip, hailing Brook’s effort as one of the finest grabs of the season. Pretorius, who struggled to find rhythm in his short stay, departed after managing just 2 runs off 4 balls.

South Africa hold firm to seal victory
Despite Brook’s brilliance and England’s early wickets, South Africa’s middle order fired back strongly. Skipper Aiden Markram (28 off 14) provided the initial spark, while young star Dewald Brevis (23 off 10) and Donovan Ferreira (25 off 11) unleashed a flurry of sixes to lift their side to 97/5 in 7.5 overs before rain intervened once again.
After the break, England were handed a revised target of 69 runs from 5 overs. The chase began disastrously as Kagiso Rabada removed Phil Salt first ball. Jos Buttler (25 off 11) played a captain’s knock with three sixes, but wickets kept tumbling at the other end. Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch delivered under pressure, restricting England to 54/5, sealing a memorable 14-run win for the Proteas.
