On and off the cricket field, Shubman Gill has been in the news. As the Asia Cup 2025 kicked off, the Indian opener’s team made a strong statement with a dominant victory. While Gill’s role in the match was brief, his performance was impactful. Meanwhile, he also made headlines away from the pitch by revealing a fun and unusual cricketing experience he had with an international football star.

Shubman Gill unveils who he thinks is the ‘Weirdest person’ he’s played cricket with

During a recent chat on the Apple Music YouTube channel with host Naina, Gill shared some fascinating insights. The Indian skipper was asked to name the ‘weirdest person’ he had ever played cricket with, and he responded with a surprising name: none other than Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Gill explained that he met the Portuguese star during a camp at the iconic Old Trafford stadium, and while many of United’s English players had some experience with cricket from their school days, Fernandes and several of his teammates had never picked up a bat or ball before. Watching them try to play the sport, Gill said, was a truly “fun and fascinating” experience for him. When Naina jokingly teased him about not being a Manchester United fan, Gill quickly set the record straight, stating, “No, no, I am a Man U fan. I love all sports, and just watching different athletes go about their things and knowing their mindset is something I really enjoy.”

Asia Cup 2025: A dominant display and record-breaking victory of India

On the field, Gill’s team, India, began their Asia Cup campaign with a resounding statement of intent. In a one-sided contest, their bowlers were utterly dominant, dismissing the host team, UAE, for a mere 57 runs. The standout performer with the ball was Kuldeep Yadav, who was named Player of the Match for his exceptional spell of 4 for 7 in just 2.3 overs. He was well-supported by Shivam Dube, who took a valuable 3 for 4 with his medium-pace. With a small target to chase, India’s batsmen made short work of it, wrapping up the win in just 4.3 overs. Abhishek Sharma provided a blistering start with 30 runs from just 16 balls, while Gill remained unbeaten on 20 from 9 balls as India won the match by 9 wickets with a staggering 93 balls remaining.
