The incident took place when both Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams were staying at the same hotel during their New Zealand tour. Virat Kohli’s cricket advice turns Into life-changing conversation
During her interview with Mashable India Jemimah Rodrigues revealed that Kohli welcomed their request warmly and invited them to the hotel cafe where he was sitting with his wife Anushka. The first thirty minutes of their discussion focused purely on cricket with Kohli sharing valuable batting insights and techniques.
However, the conversation took a more profound turn when Kohli delivered inspiring words that left a lasting impact on both women cricketers. “He actually told Smriti and me that ‘you both have the power to change women’s cricket and I can see that happening’” Rodrigues recalled. This encouragement from one of India’s greatest cricketers motivated them to take greater responsibility in transforming the women’s game in the country.

When Virat-Anushka were asked to leave cafe
What started as professional cricket discussion gradually evolved into a casual friendly conversation covering various aspects of life experiences and personal journeys. Rodrigues described the atmosphere as feeling like “long-lost friends reuniting after years” with conversations flowing naturally between all four participants.
The group became so engrossed in their discussion that they completely lost track of time. Their conversation continued well past the cafe’s closing hours stretching to approximately 11:30 PM. Eventually the cafe staff had to politely intervene asking the group to vacate as it was well beyond operating hours. “The only reason we stopped was because the cafe guys kicked us out. ‘That’s enough. It’s 11:30. Leave now’” Rodrigues laughed while recalling the incident.
This heartwarming story showcases the humble and approachable nature of both Kohli and Anushka despite their celebrity status. The couple who are parents to daughter Vamika and son Akaay have always maintained a down-to-earth approach while supporting upcoming cricketers and fellow professionals in the sport.
Rodrigues currently part of India’s squad for upcoming tournaments continues to draw inspiration from that memorable evening in New Zealand where cricket legends took time to mentor and encourage the next generation of women cricketers.
