New South Wales registered a commanding 131-run win over South Australia in the One-Day Cup at the Sydney Cricket Ground on September 20, 2025. Chasing 289 for victory, the Redbacks never gained momentum as NSW’s bowling attack applied relentless pressure before their batters piled on the runs. After Kurtis Patterson’s measured 73 off 84 balls steadied the chase following Blake Nikitaras’s early departure for 20, Gilkes brought the score to 180 before his dismissal. Facing Jordan Buckingham’s 43.3rd over, Gilkes pushed for a single and Sangha, perfectly positioned at extra cover, collected the throw and dislodged the bails with the non-striker stranded yards short of his crease. Umpires signalled out, and Gilkes was left agonising on 99 off 107 deliveries with seven fours to his name. Despite the heartbreak, Chris Green’s explosive 38 not out off 19 balls ensured NSW posted a formidable total of 288/7.

In reply, South Australia showed early promise through Mackenzie Harvey’s 60 off 55 balls, featuring six fours and two sixes. But Josh Hazlewood’s disciplined seamers and spin twin-pillars turned the contest. Tanveer Sangha spun webs to claim 4/35 while Green mirrored the feat with 4/25. South Australia stumbled from 100/3 in the 17th over to 157 all out in 36.3 overs as wickets fell at regular intervals. Brendan Doggett’s late 28 provided scant resistance, and NSW captain Sean Abbott marshalled his attack with precision. The Redbacks’ bowlers never let the required run rate pressure ease, squeezing the life out of the chase.

With this victory, New South Wales maintain their stronghold atop the One-Day Cup standings. For Gilkes, the narrow miss will fuel motivation, and with form on his side, a maiden century appears imminent. The Redbacks now look forward to reinforcing their dominance in the group stage when they return to the SCG.
