Guyana Amazon Warriors falter in CPL 2025 final

The Amazon Warriors, despite a promising start, fell short in the final after posting a below-par total of 130/8, leaving the team with much to regret as they missed out on a third CPL title. Ben McDermott (28 off 17 balls) started strongly but was dismissed just as he looked set to accelerate. Quentin Sampson’s early departure for a duck (0 off 2 balls) put pressure on the middle-order and Shai Hope (12 off 19) struggled to get going, leaving the Warriors’ batting lineup stifled.

Moeen Ali (10 off 14) and Shimron Hetmyer (4 off 13) could not capitalize on their starts, and it was left to Iftikhar Ahmed (30 off 27) and Pretorius (25 off 18) to rebuild. However, the pressure continued to mount as the Trinbago bowlers, led by Hosein (2/26) and Saurabh Netravalkar (3/25), kept a tight lid on the scoring rate. Despite a late flurry of runs from Romario Shepherd (13 off 9), the Warriors fell short of posting a defendable total. Their failure to build partnerships and convert starts into big scores ultimately sealed their fate, leaving Trinbago with a relatively straightforward chase.

Akeal Hosein’s all-round performance seals CPL 2025 title for Trinbago Knight Riders

Hosein’s remarkable all-round display was the cornerstone of Knight Riders’ victory in the 2025 CPL final. With a target of 131 in sight, Hosein’s calm, composed finish with the bat, scoring a quickfire 16 not out off just 7 balls, saw his team across the line with 12 balls remaining. However, it was his early breakthrough with the ball that set the tone for the Knight Riders’ dominant performance. Hosein claimed two vital wickets, including the key scalp of Shimron Hetmyer (4 off 13) and the crucial wicket of Shai Hope (12 off 19), putting the Warriors on the back foot early in their innings.

Despite occasional bursts from Pretorius and Ahmed, Hosein’s contributions with the ball had reduced the Warriors to a low total. In the chase, Trinbago’s top order found itself in trouble, with wickets falling at regular intervals. However, Hosein remained calm and collected, hitting boundaries at critical moments, even after the departure of Kieron Pollard (21 off 12) and Andre Russell (0 off 1). Hosein’s support at the tail end, alongside Keacy Carty (1 not out), steered his side to a well-deserved win. Hosein’s combination of flair and control with both bat and ball made him the standout performer of the final, earning him the Player of the Match award and solidifying his place as one of the CPL’s most valuable all-rounders.
