The rumours of Virat Kohli being sacked from the captaincy of Indian Premier League (IPL) team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have been dismissed by the franchise.
After few changes made by RCB in teams coaching staff, speculations were made that after a spate of underwhelming seasons, the franchise is lining up former Proteas international AB de Villiers as their new captain for the new season. However, the three-time IPL finalists have denied the reports claiming Kohli will continue as captain.
“We can clarify on record that the news is incorrect and Virat Kohli is very much the captain of RCB for the next season as well,” an RCB spokesman was quoted as saying by India Today on Sunday.
In the past couple of weeks, RCB have altered its team management. Gary Kirsten has replaced Daniel Vettori as the head coach whereas fielding coach Trent Woodhill and bowling coach Andrew McDonald have also been shown the exit doors.
Meanwhile, Ashish Nehra was announced to have joined RCB’s coaching leadership team. He was the RCB bowling mentor during IPL 2018 when the team failed to enter the playoffs, finishing sixth in the points table.
Virat Kohli has been with RCB since the inception of the IPL and in 163 matches, has scored 4948 runs with four centuries and 34 fifties.
