Veteran India batsman Suresh Raina is highly impressed with the way Prithvi Shaw began his Test career with a memorable century on debut saying his scoring rate reminds him of Virender Sehwag.
“He played really well,” Raina was quoted as saying by IANS. “Nice, hardworking guy. He reminds me of Viru (Virender Sehwag). The brisk rate at which he scores runs and his fearlessness. The way he played his shots is pure class. He is one for the future,” he said.
Raina, for the record is on the list of Indian players who have scored a ton on debut. The dashing left-hander, who is now only a part of India’s limited overs side, scored 120 against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2010.
Making his Test debut at the age of 18, Shaw grabbed the opportunity with both hands by cracking a flawless 134 off just 154 balls and reaching the three figure mark off 99 balls.
The U-19 World Cup winning captain’s innings was laced with 19 fours.
Raina, however, feels that it’s early to predict whether Shaw is the stable opener India are searching for in Test cricket. “It’s too early to say that. Let’s hope for the best.”
