Gautam Gambhir announces retirement from all formats of cricket

One of India’s best opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. Gambhir posted a video of his announcement on social media on Tuesday.

Gambhir will play his last game for Delhi in the ongoing Ranji Trophy against Andra Pradesh.

Gambhir will be remembered for his role in India winning the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 World Cup trophies. He was also a key member of the Indian team that reached the No. 1 rank for the first time in Test cricket under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

The 37-year-old was the top-ranked batsman in Test cricket and was named the ICC Test Player of the Year in 2009.

Gambhir has played 58 Test matches for India scoring 4154 runs at an average of 41.96 and 9 centuries. In ODIs, he clubbed 5238 runs at an average of 39.68 and 11 centuries in 147 matches. He also made his mark in T20 internationals playing 37 matches, scoring 932 runs at an average of 27.41 with 7 half-centuries.

Gambhir is one of the most successful captains in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise to win the two IPL titles – in 2012 and 2014.
