IPL 2019: MI skipper Rohit Sharma punished for hitting the stumps after being given out

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma has been fined 15 percent of his match fee after a breach of the Code of Conduct in their game against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.

Rohit, who was given out leg before wicket (LBW) in the fourth over of Mumbai’s run-chase, hit the stumps with his bat after being adjudged. He has been charged under Level 1 of 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct.

“Sharma admitted to the Level 1 offence 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction,” the IPL said in a statement.

With his team chasing a mammoth target of 233 to win and enhance their chances of making it to the play-offs, Rohit looked in good touch before he completely missed a Harry Gurney delivery which hit his back leg.

The umpire ruled him out and Rohit opted for a DRS. The decision, however, was upheld as the hawk-eye showed that the ball Would have clipped the top of the leg-stump and it was an umpire’s call.

Rohit was visibly upset and knocked off the bails at the non-striker’s end. He also had a couple of words with the umpire while walking back to the pavilion.

Mumbai went on to lose the game by 34 runs in the end, despite a blistering knock from Hardik Pandya, and have 14 points from 12 games. They play their last two matches of the league stage at home, against KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The MI skipper was earlier fined Rs 12 lakh for his team’s slow over-rate against Kings XI Punjab.
