MS Dhoni’s dismissal in the penultimate over during India’s World Cup 2019 semi-final defeat to New Zealand has emerged as one of the biggest talking points after dejected Indian fans shared a video proof, claiming that the legendary wicket-keeper was run-out on a controversial delivery.
As per the ICC’s rules, in the final 10 overs (41–50) a maximum of five fielders are allowed to field outside the 30-yard circle. But, before the ball was delivered, as shown in the video which is doing the rounds, six players were outside the ring. And the umpire should have called it a no-ball, or even a dead ball.
Dhoni would still have been out on a retrospective ruling because a run out is the one form of dismissal allowed on a no-ball.
But some fans believe, probably mistakenly, that Martin Guptill should not have been in a position to make his wonder throw to remove Dhoni.
In the end, Guptill’s superb throw left India needing 25 off nine balls, and without the experienced Dhoni at the crease, they had no hope, falling 18 runs short.

The ball before @msdhoni was run out. Martin Guptill was pushed back to fine leg. There were six fielders outside the ring and the umpires messed up big time. A simple check by the umpires would have changed the course of the match #PoorUmpiring #IndVsNz @ICC pic.twitter.com/IZ0YhasjPq

Issue is not the fact that there would anyway have been a run out off a no ball. Had Guptill been the fielder inside the circle Dhoni may not have gone for the 2nd run.
