Shreyas Iyer eager to make comeback into the Indian team, can he be the number 4?

The Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer is gearing himself up to make a comeback into the Indian side. 24 years old Iyer made his international debut in Dec 2017, but since then has played only 6 ODI and 6 T20I matches for India.

In ODIs, he scored a total of 210 runs in his 5 innings, with an average of 42. His batting performance in the Indian Premier League has also been brilliant, and the way he led his side this season is praiseworthy.

Iyer is a member of India A squad which is currently on the tour of West Indies for 5 ODIs and 3 Test matches.

In a recent interview with BCCI, Iyer mentioned that is looking to grab that opportunity.

I deserve a chance now, its been a long time now, so yeah, the performance will also count in the A series.“, said Iyer.

Iyer is looking up to the greats of the game, like Virat, Dhoni, and Rohit. “If you look at Virat Kohli, he is always hungry for runs and you can see it in his batting. You know, I want to get that hunger in myself and if you look at Dhoni, he is very calm and composed in pressure situations. So, and Rohit obviously is very talented and he has got so much time when he plays. He makes batting look easy.“, he added.

India has struggled to find a strong number 4 batsman in the last 2 years. In a way, this also cost them the semi-finals against New Zealand when the middle order got tested due to the quick dismissal of KL Rahul, Rohit, and Virat.

Now the question is, will Iyer hold the answer to this Indian team’s struggle?
