England captain Eoin Morgan calls 2019 World Cup final result ‘unfair’

Team England skipper Eoin Morgan feels the 2019 World Cup Final result was unfair despite his team winning the Trophy for the first time.

A week post England’s maiden World Cup win, skipper Eoin Morgan is still thinking about how the game ended and is pondering upon whether his team truly deserved to win the title.

The Lord’s witnessed a nailbiting encounter where hosts England emerged victorious, thanks to a superior boundary count as compared to New Zealand. Initially, both the stipulated 50 overs and Super Over had co-incidentally ended in a tie.

“I’m not sure winning it makes it any easier. I don’t think it’s fair to have a result like that when there’s very little between the sides,” Morgan expressed his opinion to the Times.

“I don’t think there was one moment that you could say: ‘That actually cost the game there.’ It was quite balanced,” he added.

When everyone felt that both the victory and the post-victory celebrations would suffice, Morgan somehow feels disturbed by the way in which his team won the World Cup Final. But he admitted in the end that it wouldn’t be ideal if his team landed up on the losing side.

“A little bit (troubled), because there’s no defining moment that you’d say: ‘Yes, we thoroughly deserved it.’ It’s just been crazy. It would be more difficult to lose, of course.”

“I’m black and white. I’m normally going: ‘I know. I was there, that happened. But I can’t stick my finger on where the game was won and lost.”

The game saw an absolute turning point when Martin Guptill’s throw deflected from Ben Stokes’ bat and crossed the boundary rope, and consequently, that went in England’s favour –  six runs were added to their score.

Later on, a thorough examination of the rules revealed that England should have actually been given five runs. Umpire Kumar Dharmasena too admitted this particular ‘error’ in the World Cup Final.

“I actually feel more comfortable about it having watched all of the game now,” Morgan said.

In fact, captain Morgan is still very much in touch with his New Zealand counterpart, Kane Williamson, and the two are busy in decoding the drama that ended at Lord’s on July 14.

“Dealing with the aftermath has been quite mixed really. I spoke to Kane over the last couple of days on numerous occasions and none of us has come up with a rational explanation as to the various times we gave them the game and they gave it back to us. Like me, he can’t get his head around everything.”

Post-Team India winning the World Cup at the Wankhede in 2011, it was Australia and England who lifted the trophies on their home soil as well in 2015 and 2019 respectively.
