In spite of being one of the key players for New Zealand, apart from his valuable knock of 73 (not out) in Black Caps’ World Cup 2019 opener against Sri Lanka, Martin Guptill failed to show some much-needed magic with his willow.
However, he will be remembered for his two sensational run-outs – one of MS Dhoni in the semi-final against India and the other, in the Super Over of the eventful and dramatic World Cup Final. Besides, the 32-year-old will also curse himself for the throw that deflected off Ben Stokes’ bat to the boundary and worked in England’s favour at the end of the game.
Sadly, Guptill managed to make only 186 runs in 10 matches at a disappointing average of 20.66 in the 2019 World Cup. After a painful loss, ending up as the runners-up in the tournament, Guptill took to Instagram to thank two people who meant the world to him – his wife Laura McGoldrick and daughter Harley – for their love and encouragement, and for standing by him through thick and thin.
In another post, he thanked all the fans and his teammates for their constant support. He also described the World Cup Final at Lord’s as an “incredible” one.
He expressed that 14th July 2019, the day of the World Cup Final, was both the ‘best and worst’ day of his cricketing life.
