West Indies vs India 2019: Virat Kohli breaks Ricky Ponting’s all-time record, becomes the ‘King of the Decade’

Virat Kohli is breaking batting records at will. The India captain is just 30-year-old and has already scored 77 centuries, only 23 less than Sachin Tendulkar’s record that once looked improbable to break.

Kohli is not just making batting look ridiculously easy, but he is also scoring at an unprecedented consistency across all formats of the game.

In a jaw-dropping stat that is a reflection of his greatness, Kohli has become the first and only batsman to score 20,000 runs in international cricket in a decade.

He has scored 20,502 runs across all three formats out of which he amassed 20018 in the ongoing decade. The Delhi-lad made his Test and T20I debut in 2010 while he had already scored 484 runs in ODIs in the previous decade after making his debut in the 50-over format in 2008.

Before Kohli, Ricky Ponting held the record for the most international runs scored in a decade with 18,962 runs in the 2000s. Jacques Kallis, the veteran South Africa all-rounder, is a distant third on the list with 16,777 runs in the 2000s.

Kohli got past the 20,000-run mark when hit a match-winning 114 not out off just 99 deliveries in the final ODI of a 3-match series against West Indies in Trinidad on Wednesday. His 43rd ODI century also powered India to win the match by six wickets and seal the series by 2-0.
