Steve Smith has been ruled out of the third Ashes Test at Headingley due to the concussion.
The 30-year-old Smith was hit in the neck by a 92.4 mph bouncer from Jofra Archer on day four of the second Test at Lord’s, but passed an initial concussion test and returned to continue his innings.
Coach Justin Langer confirmed the former Aussie skipper’s absence after the latter sat out of training sessions on Tuesday.
Smith has scored 142, 144 and 92 in his three innings so far in the series.
It has not been confirmed who will replace Smith in the Australia team for the Headingley Test, which starts on Thursday (August 22).
Smith was replaced by Marnus Labuschagne for the remainder of the game at Lord’s, with the South African-born all-rounder becoming the first concussion substitute in Test cricket.
He scored a gritty 59 as Australia survived a tense final evening to register a draw and preserve their 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
