Shikhar Dhawan added to India A squad for last two one-dayers against South Africa A

Shikhar Dhawan, the left-handed opening batsman, has been added to India A squad currently competing against the touring South Africa A for the fourth and fifth one-dayers.

India A won the first of five one-dayers – all in Thiruvananthapuram – by 69 runs. The second game will be played on Saturday (August 31).

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee on Friday decided to add Mr Shikhar Dhawan to India A squad for the fourth and fifth one-day against South Africa A. India A are currently leading the series 1-0 following their 69 runs victory in the first one-day held on Thursday in Thiruvananthapuram,” a statement from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said.

Dhawan has been called in to replace Vijay Shankar who injured his right thumb. The southpaw recently played the T20I and ODI series against West Indies in the Caribbean. He failed to perform up to the mark and scored 1, 23, 3 in the T20I series, while just 2 and 36 in the ODI series.

Meanwhile, Vijay was not part of the India ODI squad for the West Indies tour as he was not fully fit. He, however, made his return from injury in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) earlier this month. But there also he scored just ten runs and picked three wickets in three games for Chepauk Super Gillies.

The BCCI had earlier named two India A squads – one for the first three matches and another for the last two games – with Manish Pandey (first three games) and Shreyas Iyer (last two) sharing captaincy duties.
