Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah on Saturday produced a lethal opening spell and rattled West Indies by picking up the first five wickets. Three of these came off successive deliveries in the ninth over to leave the hosts tottering at 87 for seven at stumps.
Bumrah made inroads into the Windies line-up in the seventh over by inducing an edge from John Campbell, which Rishabh Pant accepted gleefully.
An over later, Bumrah was at his lethal best as he took the wickets of Darren Bravo, Shamarh Brooks and Roston Chase in three consecutive balls to complete his maiden Test hat-trick.
He first dismissed Bravo caught by KL Rahul at the second slip and then had both Brooks and Chase LBW in the next two balls.
With this hat-trick, Bumrah has become only the third Indian after Harbhajan Singh and Irfan Pathan to achieve the feat in the longest format of the game.
Bumrah’s figures read 6/16 from 9.1 overs at the end of the second day’s play.
Here’s how the cricketing world reacted:
The Carribean islands have seen so many fast bowling greats dish out their fury, and this performance from @Jaspritbumrah93 would have made each of those greats extremely happy. Wow just wow. #WIvIND

Greatest find in the last 7-8 years.— Mohammad Kaif (@MohammadKaif) August 31, 2019
Bumrah wouldn’t have had the hattrick if it wasn’t for the DRS. In fact, if Kohli thought of going with the bowler. Only the third Indian bowler to claim a hattrick in Tests…currently the best bowler in the world across all formats. Without doubt. #WIvIND

Bumrah is the third Indian to take a hat-trick in Test cricket.
Each delivery he bowled was fuller and swung more than more the previous ball. Exquisite control and accuracy from the champion fast bowler. #WIvInd pic.twitter.com/EAuyGKVA1h
