On the fourth day of the second Test between West Indies and India, the home team was forced to name Jermaine Blackwood as the concussion substitute for Darren Bravo.
The 30-year-old batsman was stuck on the side of his helmet by a Jasprit Bumrah delivery in the last over on Day 3.
Even though Bravo resumed his innings on the fourth day morning, he couldn’t carry on for long as delayed concussion symptoms showed up and was forced to retire hurt on 23.
And for the first time, an international match was a witness to 12 batsmen making their way out in the same innings.
Bumrah and Virat animated after Blackwood’s dismissal
Blackwood looked solid in the middle, having scored 38 runs off 72 balls with the help of four boundaries and a six. He added a 61-run stand with Shamarh Brooks, who scored a half-century. However, it was Bumrah, who accounted for Blackwood’s wicket. The Indian speedster bowled a full-length ball outside off and the batsman made a half-push towards the leather.
The ball moved away from Blackwood and took the outside edge. Wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant didn’t have any trouble whatsoever in completing the catch. The dismissal made the Indian fielders animated.
Bumrah put his fingers on the lips and also made a gesture, which asked the Jamaican crowd to keep their mouth shut. Even Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper, followed suit and made a similar gesture.
The wicket was an important one as the rest of the Windies batsmen could only add 51 runs. Five overs after Blackwood was dismissed, Kohli ran Brooks out. Jason Holder churned out a quickfire 39 off 35, but it was only to defy the inevitable – another resounding Indian triumph in the Caribbean Islands.
