Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of South Africa Tests, replacement announced

India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming home Test series against South Africa that is slated to begin from October 2.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday informed that Bumrah has sustained a minor stress fracture in his lower back.

Umesh Yadav has been named as Bumrah’s replacement for the three-match Test series.

Umesh, who has taken 119 wickets in 41 tests, last played a Test in 2018 at Perth against Australia.

In the meanwhile, Bumrah will undergo rehabilitation at the NCA in Bangalore and will be monitored by the BCCI Medical Team.

The injury means Bumrah will now have to wait to play his first Test at home. He has been the pace spearhead for India in recent times, picking 62 wickets in 12 Tests, all away from home.

Bumrah has been in red-hot form and picked up 13 wickets in two Tests in West Indies. It included two five-wicket hauls and a hat-trick.

He was rested from the T20I series at home against South Africa, which both teams shared 1-1.

India’s updated squad for South Africa Tests:

Virat Kohli (c), Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wk), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Shubman Gill.
