Shreyas Iyer hits MS Dhoni-esque helicopter shot against Punjab in Syed Mustaq Ali Trophy

Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer took Punjab bowlers to the cleaners on Wednesday in a Syed Mushtaq Ali game. In his blistering 40-ball 80, he cleared the boundary ropes with ease.

His innings was laced with four sixes and seven fours. And, one shot during his whirlwind knock stood out – it was the helicopter shot – which is a trademark stroke of former India skipper MS Dhoni.

Iyer played the helicopter shot on the first ball of the 20th over, and it came off successfully as Mumbai registered a mammoth 243/3 in their stipulated 20 overs.

To take their Net Run-Rate (NRR) above Karnataka and qualify for the semifinals, Mumbai needed to restrict Punjab to 150 or below. But, Punjab openers Shubman Gill (78, 38b, 7×4, 5×6) and Abhishek Sharma (47, 29b, 4×4, 3×6), tore apart the Mumbai attack during their 84-run partnership.

Gill and Gurkeerat Mann added 70 for the second wicket as Punjab reached 150 by the 14th over. Soon with the fall of Gill’s wicket, Punjab lost momentum and finished 22 runs short.
