AUS vs PAK 2019: Ricky Ponting reveals why Marnus Labuschagne’s pull shot is so effective

Ricky Ponting, the former Australia skipper, was no doubt a legend in the cricketing field. The way he has captained the Aussies is an inspiration to many. Ponting is not only a good leader but also an excellent analyzer of the game and on Friday he gave an example of his breathtaking wisdom.

In the Gabba Test, Australian top-order batsman Marnus Labuschagne scored a resplendent century, which helped his side to claim the victory over Pakistan.

Labuschagne, in his 185-run knock, played some fabulous shots consisting of a pull shot, which reminded a few of the Ricky Ponting’s.

‘Punter’ was one of the best pull shot players; his style of putting his stride forward, leaning towards the length of the ball and striking the full pace deliveries either towards the mid-wicket or in the square region of the wicket was a treat to watch. The Master of this art gave his own view as to what does he think of Labuschagne’s pull shot.

Ponting came up with exceptional analysis and revealed why Australia’s new No. 3 is so good. Labuschagne, during his sensational innings in the first Test, played grounded pull shots, which is difficult as it always attracts top edges.

“The toe of the bat is up nice and high. Never at any stage does that get below the height of the ball. When you have the toe of the bat up in the air like that, all the weight has gone out of the bat, and all you have to do is drop the bat onto the ball,” said Ponting.

“Very rare, you get top edges when you’re playing like that. The ones that you top edge are ones that come from underneath the ball. If your bat is slow and your hands are low, and you’re swinging up and underneath the height of the ball, that’s the one you hit in the air,” added Ponting.
