Opener David Warner was honored with the Allan Border Medal during the Australian Cricket Awards ceremony at Crown Melbourne on Monday. The Allan Border medal is awarded to the most outstanding male cricketer in a calendar year.
This was the third medal of Warner, apart from him, former captain Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke have won the award four times.
After receiving the medal, Warner gave an emotional speech and admitted how he let down his fans due to his infamous involvement in the ball-tampering saga in the 2018 Test series against South Africa, following which the southpaw was slapped with a one-year ban from international and domestic cricket imposed by the Australian cricket board.
However, after a one-year ban, Warner returned with a bang. He started the proceedings with Indian Premier League (IPL), where the left-handed batter smashed 692 runs in 12 matches and won the orange cap – an annual cricket award presented to the leading run scorer in the lucrative league.
The Paddington-born also had a tremendous 2019 World Cup, where he amassed 647 runs at an outstanding average of 71-plus. He was just one run behind Indian opener Rohit Sharma. However, his comeback in Test cricket wasn’t as impressive as he exhibited in white-ball cricket. Warner had a terrible stint in the Ashes where he scored only 95 runs in five games.
Just like any prominent player, Warner also earned back the purple patch in red-ball cricket after the failure in Ashes. He slammed a scintillating 154 against Pakistan at the Gabba, followed by his personal best score of 335 not out in the following Test at Adelaide Oval.
Warner showcased his determination against India as well, where he scored an ODI ton last month and guided his team register a ten-wicket win in Mumbai.
Meanwhile, England speedster Stuart Broad took a cheeky dig at David Warner after the latter won the Allan Border Medal. Broad made Warner his bunny in the 2019 Ashes as he dismissed the Aussie on seven out of ten times.
Broad took to Twitter and replied on an old tweet from England Cricket Board’s official Twitter handle, which had posted a clip of Broad dismissing David Warner in the last Ashes series.
