Be it Sachin vs Lara, Federer vs. Nadal, or Hamilton vs. Vettel; each sport has its own rivalry amongst its two best players in every era.

For soccer, it is the evergreen debate, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. The numbers produced by the two football icons are just unfathomable.

The two stand in sixth and seventh in the list of all-time goal scorers in club football. Messi (635 goals) remained loyal to his Barcelona club and led the Argentina football team in international football.

Meanwhile, Portugal captain Ronaldo (670 goals) has played in top-notch leagues all over the globe representing club giants Manchester United, Real Madrid, and now at Juventus.

The two have faced off against each other on numerous occasions for several years during Ronaldo’s stay in Spain. Both Messi and Ronaldo featured in various El Clasico encounter in La Liga.

However, Shreyas Iyer – India’s newfound number four batsman in white-ball cricket – gave his verdict when asked about his preference on the two giants of football.

Iyer was asked ‘Ronaldo or Messi’ by one of his followers using the hashtag Ask Shreyas. The Mumbai batsman registered his loyalty to Ronaldo eventually.

Iyer’s successful ODI series against Australia and New Zealand silenced critics about the number four slot for good.

Iyer, along with KL Rahul, proved to answers to India’s brittle middle-order problem. The Indian batting lineup will be strengthened with the return of Hardik Pandya at number six.
