The coronavirus pandemic has forced the entire world to go on standstill mode. In India, the central government has announced the 21-day lockdown in order to stop the spread of COVID-19. Many public figures, including cricketers, are following the lockdown and inspiring citizens to do the same.
In the process, many cricketers are shifting their focus towards social media to engage with fans and other cricketers. Recently, former England power-hitter Kevin Pietersen ran an Instagram live session in which he invited Indian opener Rohit Sharma to reflect his views on his life, experiences that he earned in his career and other aspects.
During the chat, Rohit talked about many things, including his favourite coach of all-time.
The Indian deputy picked former Australian captain Ricky Ponting as the best coach he’s played under. Rohit said the way Punter handled the team when he was a skipper of IPL franchise Mumbai Indians was certainly inspirational.
“Very difficult to pick one name because they all bring something or the other to the table. But Ricky Ponting to me was magic. The way he handled the team when he was captain for the first half, and then gave it to me, it takes a lot of guts to do that,” said Rohit.
Rohit also revealed how Ponting helped him, after stepping down from the captaincy. The Nagpur-born said he learned a lot from the former Aussie.
“After that as well, to be as involved as he was, as a member of the support staff, he was helping all the youngsters and guided mine through the captaincy. I got to learn a lot from him. He was a different ball game altogether,” added the 32-year-old.
In the midway of 2013 season, Ponting left the MI captaincy and handed over the responsibility to Rohit. Undoubtedly Ponting’s move turned out to be a masterstroke as Rohit ended up winning the 2013 edition and then led the side to three more titles in 2015, 2017 and 2019.
