The 13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) was supposed to kick-off from March 29, but due to Coronavirus pandemic followed by a lockdown, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was forced to postpone the 2020 edition till indefinite time.
In the meantime, a discussion took place to find out the best captain of the lucrative league. For which, a jury comprising of 50 members including former cricketers like Kevin Pietersen and Gautam Gambhir chose the two best captains of IPL.
Former England power-striker Kevin Pietersen has picked Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni, as the greatest captain ever in the history of IPL whereas Gambhir went for four-time IPL trophy winner Rohit Sharma.
Pietersen said that it would be difficult to argue against Dhoni’s choice as he plays under immense pressure and enormous expectations.
“It will be very difficult just with the weight of expectation to go against MS Dhoni because of what everybody expects from him, how he has to live his life and what he has been through captaining India and then captaining the CSK,” Pietersen said while speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Connected’ show.
Gambhir, on the other hand, picked Rohit as the greatest captain of IPL and opined that captaincy is all about winning the IPL trophies and Hitman has won it for the maximum four times. The left-handed batsman, who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two IPL titles (2012, 2014) also expressed that Rohit might end up winning 6-7 times as a skipper in the cash-rich league.
“I think it’s Rohit Sharma. He has won it four times. Captaincy is all about winning trophies. He will end up being the most successful IPL captain of all time as well. He has four already, he may finish at 6-7 maybe under his belt,” said Gambhir.
