In the last decade, Australia’s premier batsman Steve Smith has carried the baton of a modern-day batting masterclass.
It all started ten years back in 2010, during a Test series against Pakistan at Lords where legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting handed Smith his maiden international cap.
Smudge started out as a leg-spinner, who was pretty handy with the bat, coming in at the lower-order.
Slowly but steadily, Smith’s prowess with bat languishing down the hard was too hard to ignore, and he began to climb up the ladder in the Aussie side, coming in at number six.
And now, Smith is adjudged as one of the best batsman produced in Test cricket, coming in at the crucial number three slot.
Smith is currently at the summit of the Test rankings for batsmen and is also in the whereabouts of top 10 batsmen in ODI cricket.
On Monday, Smith commemorated his auspicious day with a post on Instagram which captioned, “It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since my Test debut. It’s been an amazing ride so far. Maybe another 10 years in me?”
Moreover, his journey in the Australian team in the last decade has not been short of controversies. It was only in last year’s ODI World Cup that Smith made his international comeback, after spending his one-year ban period.
Smith, along with batting mainstay David Warner, was involved in the infamous Sandpaper Gate scandal which broke out during the 2018 tour of South Africa.
As a result, Smith’s decorated captaincy post was also snatched as Tim Paine and Aaron Finch took over the helms under Justin Langer.
